The Beauty Queen of Leenane

by Martin McDonagh; Direted by Michael Tabib
March 13 – April 4

When it comes to Irish literature, there are some amazing names that stand out, names that celebrate the poetic and charming personality of the people and their long heritage and culture.

Dylan Thomas and JAMES Joyce come to mind immediately. But even those who lived and worked in England in the past brought with them the wit and biting humor of the Irish disguised as British wit; think George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde, just to name a couple.

Martin McDonaugh is one of the contemporary leading theatrical talents from England today. Although born in Camberwell, London, his Irish identity is unmistakably stamped on most of his works. His Irish parents came from County Galway and moved back there in 1992, leaving, McDonagh and his brother, writer-director John Michael McDonagh, in London.

Mr. McDonaugh is winner of the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle Awards; Co-winner of The 1998 Lucille Lortel Award, with much acclaim all over the world by now. His plays have been performed in the United Kingdon, Ireland, Scotland, Europe, and on this Continent, to name a few.

What makes The Beauty Queen Of Leenane special is the amazing compact dialogue, the built-in silent pauses allowing for deeper subtext meaning, the author’s choice of words, the rhythm of the language, and the underlying absurd humor one is destined to encounter in Ireland. And in spite of its desperate nuances, there is humanity and recognition of the human spirit and its flaws in all of us.

Set in the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, it tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman, and Mag, her manipulative aging mother, whose interference leads to the play’s terrifying denouement.

It is with great pleasure that we present The Beauty Queen Of Leenane with four of our talented actors and many of our supporting talent off stage. Enjoy an evening with us again and cheer the amazing volunteers who give you fine theater all year round with passion and aplomb.
The Beauty Queen of Leenane is directed by Michael Tabib and plays March 13 through April 4 at Curtain Call Theatre, Russian River Hall, 20347 Highway 116, Monte Rio, CA 95462. Contact us or call 707-524-8739 today for dates and reservations.

After all three matinee shows there will be Q&A sessions. We have reached out to the Director of Nursing Home Health Inc, Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office, Family Justice Center Sonoma County, Senior Advocacy Services and The Council on Aging to assist with this. This play is so pertinent to these subjects of mental health and elder abuse, both powerful subjects often neglected by the mass media. As part of our mission as an educational non-profit, we at Curtain Call Theatre feel it is important to make this discussion open and available to as many of our audiences as possible.
